A recently launched EcoSourcer phone app is a perfect example of how new technology and a bit of people power can really make a difference.
Developed by local tech company FuzzyLogic Solutions, the app is a quick and easy way for members of the public to record animal or plant sightings. By adding a few words of description, along with a date, time, location and photo, anyone with the app can help build up an Island-wide picture of a particular species – and it could also be used to record other environmental issues such as pollution or tree disease.
The app is currently being trialled with the local hedgehog population. Sandy Moore, founder of the Manx Hedgehog Conservation Society, said hedgehog sightings across the UK have declined and there are thought to only 1 million hedgehogs remaining.
“The launch of the EcoSourcer app will give us the ability over the years to study our spikey friends’ habits and whereabouts here on the Isle of Man, giving us a clearer picture and evidence of their whereabouts to see whether their numbers are increasing or decreasing.
“Hedgehogs are art of our heritage and it is important that the generations to come can still enjoy their night time visits, and of course they eat our slugs and snails! The conservation of our Island’s hedgehogs needs addressing now not in ten years’ time when it could be too late!”
